What is the Cultural Competence Engagement Modules (CCEM) Program?
CCEM uses the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) tool to assesses how we experience difference and commonalities. The IDI tool coupled with an Intercultural Development Plan (IDP) provides participants with the support needed to increase their level of cultural competence.

Modules
Introduction to Cultural Competence and the IDI Group Debriefs
The first module of CCEM introduces participants to the program and the activities, defines key terms and themes, and introduces the IDI, including the specific orientations on the Intercultural Development Continuum (IDC).
Cultural Diversity
Module 2 highlights the five approaches to diversity and inclusion, and then gives an in-depth analysis of culture and how it emerges in lived experiences.
Emotional Intelligence and Difficult Conversations
Participants receive a framework of awareness and skills to build emotional intelligence needed for everyday conversations, including ones that may be uncomfortable or difficult.
Microaggressions and Microinterventions
Module 4 explores target and non-target group dynamics of people that experience the different types of oppression, and introduces the concept of intersectionality. The module reviews modern isms and internalized oppression, microaggressions, and what can be done to be an ally.
Race and Privilege
The fifth module unpacks race and racism, the concept of race literacy, how race is likely experienced on the IDI continuum, as well as white privilege and how to identify and make privilege visible.
Gender, Sexual Orientation, and Privilege
The final CCEM module tackles gender and privilege, including how Catholic colleges like Boston College can be a welcoming place for individuals who identify as LGBTQ+. Participants then receive a framework allyship, and then tie all of their learning back to the IDP.
